Lucy sur Yonne Village
Lucy sur Yonne is a tranquil pretty village in northern Burgundy, with the Canal du Nivernais and the River Yonne meandering through.
A local baker makes delicious bread and croissants twice a week in the old village bakery. There is a riverside snack bar in the next village that is next to the local camp site and is nice location for an evening meal.
The cottage is near to the church and the bells ring during the day, but not at night! It’s something you easily get used to and its lovely to hear from afar when taking an evening stroll along the river and canal or up in the woods near the local Chateau.
Burgundy is divided into 4 areas - Yonne, Nievre, Cote D'Or and Saone et Loire. The village is in the Yonne (89), but very close to the Nievre (58) just a few kilometres away.
Lucy is around 2 hours from Paris by car and around 2.5 hours by train which can be caught nearby in Chatel Censoir, Coulanges sur Yonne or at the terminus in Clamecy. You can also change onto another local branch line down through the Morvan National Par to Autun which is a delightful journey.
There are a couple of restaurants in Coulanges sur Yonne (2km), several in Clamecy (9km) and Vezelay(20km) and many dotted around in the villages along the river and canal. There is a local railway halt in Coulanges and a station in Clamecy.
The city of Auxerre is around 40km or 40 minutes by car and 45 minutes by train where there is a large selection of shops to visit, old buildings to explore, excellent restaurants to try and the Burgundian lifestyle to discover.
Local Area of Burgundy
The main reason that we bought our own house here 30 years ago was to live near a river &/or a canal (& we actually managed both!) so where better to go than Burgundy which is blessed with many rivers and canals of which the most notable in our area are the River Yonne and the Canal du Nivernais.
They meander through the countryside, often criss-crossing or side by side and frequently joining forces to give long stretches of shimmering navigation rich with fish, wild aquatic life & water fowl. It is also rich in bird life and flora & fauna and the famous escargots which are jealously protected. We think it’s one the most peaceful, natural and unspoilt area of France we’ve seen and not overrun with tourists who mainly cruise through on the canal.
Directions & Links
Directions
By Road
From the north via Auxerre and from the West and South via Clamecy take the N151 to Coulanges Sur Yonne. By the canal bridge take the D21 direction Lucy & Vezelay and follow the canal to the crossroads in Lucy, 4kms.
After stopping at the crossroads by the bar & church turn left immediately and descend towards the canal bridge and then turn right just before it onto Rue Basse. No.1 the Studio is on the left with the single and double gates and No.3 The Chalet is 50 metres further along where you can park opposite in the layby area..
From the East via Vezelay take the D21 to Chatel Censoir and follow it through to Lucy and take the first right just by the bio farm sign on the corner and descend Rue de Fontenotte and at the bottom turn left onto Rue Basse and proceed 100 metres and there is parking opposite the Chalet on the left hand side & also for the Studio.
By Train
There is a direct service 3 or 4 times a day from Paris Bercy but do get in the correct half (usually the front carriages) marked for Clamecy as the train splits at Cravant- Bazarnes and the other half goes to Autun! We can pick you up if you wish or you can get a 3€ reduced taxi fare through Mobigo if you book 24 hours before. Call 0800 102 004 and you can be picked up from Chatel Censoir station.
By Air
Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) is the nearest (about 3 hours). If you are renting a car then we suggest you avoid the peripherique at all times and at all costs. Take the eastern exit out of CDG and take the D212 south east to the N2 taking the south west direction to Paris and then the next major exit on to the outer ring route the A104 called La Franciliene which takes you round the south-east of Paris sprawl to join the N6 near Orly. Then take the A6 to Auxerre and follow the N151 direction Nevers to Coulanges Sur Yonne then the D21 to Lucy as above. If the A104 is jammed up you can take the earlier exit for the A5 and follow this through to the junction with A19 that joins to the A6 further down just north of Auxerre.
